Linen fabric

From the Egyptian pharaohs to the princes of the Renaissance up to the great designers of both yesterday and today, linen, and linen fabrics, are a natural object of desire. Its subtlety, elegance, clean look, and comfort have made it a product whose characteristic properties, beauty, and warmth are increasingly appreciated.

One of the great secrets of linen is the length of its fibers, achieved during its delicate chain of production in which the stem of the plant is not cut into pieces, but rather is cut low to the ground so as not to lessen its beauty nor shorten its length. In addition, both the seeds and the fibers – short and long – are exploited to the maximum in two ways: either to weave, bleach, dye and finish as fabric, or to braid, polish and finish as thread. Actually, there are even more possibilities, as linen is also used to make rope as well as linseed oil paper for soap, inks, or paints.

At Equipo DRT, what we enjoy working with is the fabric for curtains and upholstery; we love the beauty, subtlety, majesty, luxury and, at the same time, comfort of linen. It gives us a wonderful sense of satisfaction to see it used in both homes and contract spaces.

LINEN FABRIC

If there is one collection in Equipo DRT that speaks the language of linen and underscores its timelessness, its naturalness, its vegetable origin, and its elegance, it is Sinua, which consists of five 100% linen fabrics – Tarkan, Kibo, Linway, Sinua, and Nabuco – all of which are designed to enrich spaces. The bigger and higher the window to be decorated, the better, as it allows the drape and transparency of each design to reach its maximum splendor.

HEAVY LINEN FABRIC

"I am always surprised because when you pick up a meter of linen fabric of a certain thickness, it weighs more than a kilo per meter. The feeling of holding that fabric in your hands lets you know how powerful it is; it's difficult to describe the feeling that a heavy linen can give: presence, how it wraps, its drape... Linen is very special." These are the words of Arantxa Porter, our Marketing Manager. It’s too bad you can only read them and not see the emotion in her eyes when she talks about heavy linen fabric and the magic of linen in general.

From our Sinua collection, we invite you to take a look at the properties and images of the Nabuco and the eponymous Sinua lines. They are simply beautiful. We have no doubt that they will thrill you, too.

LINEN COLORS

If we could name one aspect of linen that makes it special, it would be that, as a fiber, it is imperfect. It therefore does not have a fixed, uniform color, but varies depending on each plant. Of course, it falls within a standard range of color that we all associate directly with linen: a rich beige, hard to describe accurately, but as magical as the natural fiber itself.

It is true that during the production process the fibers are cleaned as much as possible to create a more regular yarn, but at the same time, this characteristic lends a great richness to the final product: a fabric that comes from a yarn that comes from a fiber that comes from a plant, a living thing. And as we all know, no two living things are alike.

However, like hair – and like all textile fibers – linen can also be colored for greater chromatic variety. Among the wonderful colors in our collection, we especially like to highlight our Gea beige and Gea indigo.

NATURAL LINEN

“Natural” and “linen” are two words that go together. Linen is a natural fiber; it comes from a plant – a living being. Hence, its qualities and characteristics let us know that it is a living fabric, in movement. In fact, one curious fact about linen is that it shrinks in winter and stretches in summer. Just like people, linen fabrics are affected by both the cold and the heat,

In addition, the natural characteristics of linen are also associated with strength, endurance and cleanliness. It may sound surprising, but we know that linen tablecloths and curtains become softer and more resistant the more harshly they are treated. Another surprise is the fact that linen absorbs and retains up to 20% of its weight in moisture. Before this is even perceptible, that moisture is released into the air for cooling during the warmer months. So linen is not only a natural fiber, but also an intelligent one.

LINEN FABRIC FOR CURTAINS

The sun is a great friend of linen, not only because its warmth makes linen curtain fabrics stretch, but also because it generates a play of light and shadow on the fabric that makes our spaces warmer, more comfortable, and even more special.

Linen is a thermo-regulating fiber; unlike polyester, which overheats in the sun, linen maintains its temperature and therefore the temperature of the interior space. It is for this reason, although perhaps we were unaware of it until now, that linen is used to make so many summer garments: as it breathes and transpires, it helps us maintain a comfortable temperature.

In addition, not only does linen not fade, it is also non-allergenic. Likewise, it does not attract insects, but rather repels them. So linen is an ideal choice for terraces, outdoor spaces, summer houses, or homes and hotels surrounded by nature, where linen fabrics can be perfectly and harmoniously integrated into the space.

PRINTED LINEN FABRIC

In the same way that linen admits both bright colors and earth tones in its dyeing processes, it also works well with prints. To see a printed linen fabric is to contemplate a work of art twice over, with the naturally rich and wonderfully textured base of the linen overlaid with a pattern added to the linen texture itself.

One of Equipo DRT's classics is our printed fabric Butterfly Linen, a fabric in which the linen has kept its natural color, but with a simple black silhouette printed on it. We couldn't love it more; and you?
